About Sefton

About Sefton

Sefton is a distinctive and diverse borough in the heart of the Liverpool City Region. It brings together thriving urban centres, historic coastal towns, and outstanding natural assets, creating a place with both character and opportunity. With a population of around 275,000, Sefton combines the benefits of coastal living with excellent connectivity to Liverpool, Manchester, and beyond.

A Place of Enterprise and Regeneration

The borough plays a central role in the region’s economy. The Port of Liverpool, located on Sefton’s southern boundary, is one of the UK’s busiest ports and a major driver of trade, logistics, and associated industries. In the north, Southport is a nationally recognised visitor destination, drawing millions of people each year to its events, attractions, and coastline.

Sefton is also investing significantly in its future. The £37 million Southport Town Deal is bringing forward transformative projects, including a new Marine Lake Events Centre and public realm improvements, to cement the town’s position as a leading coastal resort. In Bootle, a long-term regeneration programme is underway to revitalise the town centre, with new commercial, leisure, and housing opportunities being developed. These programmes reflect the borough’s ambition to diversify its economy, attract investment, and ensure growth is inclusive and sustainable.

Connections That Keep Sefton Moving

Sefton offers excellent transport infrastructure, making it an accessible and practical place to live and work. The Merseyrail network links the borough’s towns directly to Liverpool city centre in under 20 minutes, while national rail connections provide access to Manchester and London. The motorway network, including the M57, M58, and M62, connects Sefton efficiently with the wider North West. Both Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester airports are within an hour, opening up extensive domestic and international travel options.

A Borough of Culture and Coast

Sefton’s identity is shaped by its coastline and cultural life. Its 22 miles of beaches range from the dramatic sand dunes at Formby to Crosby’s world-famous Anthony Gormley installation, “Another Place.” Inland, the borough offers nature reserves, parks, and green spaces that provide opportunities for relaxation, recreation, and wellbeing.

Cultural vibrancy is equally important. Southport hosts a nationally celebrated flower show, food and drink festivals, and music events, while theatres, galleries, and community venues across the borough ensure a diverse cultural offer. This mix of natural beauty and creative activity makes Sefton a place where quality of life is central.

Communities at the Heart

What makes Sefton unique is its people. The borough is proud of its strong communities, diverse identities, and collaborative spirit. The voluntary and community sector plays a vital role, working alongside the Council and partners to improve health, wellbeing, and inclusion. Engagement with residents and stakeholders has been central to shaping regeneration plans, ensuring that the borough’s future reflects the ambitions and priorities of its communities.

Sefton is committed to ensuring that all residents feel part of the borough’s growth and success. This focus on inclusion, alongside its economic opportunities and cultural richness, makes it a borough where people can thrive personally and professionally.
